SUMMARY:SAND CASTING with Christopher Kohan (p.m.)
DESCRIPTION:Open to all levels\nAll supplies provided\nParticipants will tour the D’Amico House midweek to view Mabel D’Amico’s cast artworks\n\nInspired by Mabel D’Amico’s cast sculptures\, this workshop explores the hands-on process of sand casting in which objects and textures are pressed into sand to create molds that are then filled with plaster or cement to form sculptural pieces and reliefs. Participants explore texture\, composition\, and form while transforming everyday and found materials into expressive three-dimensional works. This class is weather-dependent\, and participants will work in the studio and outside. A critique will be held on the last day of class. \nInstructor: Christopher Kohan

SUMMARY:PIT FIRE CERAMICS with Leslie Harris (a.m.)
DESCRIPTION:Open to all levels\nAll supplies provided\nParticipants can tour the D’Amico House midweek\n\nThis hand-building clay class offers an exploration into pit fired ceramics\, an ancient method of “baking” clay in a pit fire to produce unpredictable designs\, spectacular colors\, smoky variations and textural imprints. Participants learn basic hand-building techniques to create one or two clay forms conducive to pit firing\, and then learn how elements of earth\, fire\, minerals and organic matter interact to produce unique\, one-of-a-kind effects. Participants load and observe a pit fire on the final day of class\, and pick up their completed pieces the following Monday.  \nThe pacing of this class is guided by the weather\, as clay and drying times shift with the conditions\, and students are encouraged to embrace this natural process and its unpredictable results. \nInstructor: Leslie Harris
