DESCRIPTION:Open to all levels\nAll supplies provided\n\nThis workshop will survey the fundamentals of encaustic painting\, the ancient technique of using hot wax and pigment. Explore rudimentary to complex two-dimensional methods while learning to melt\, mix\, and apply wax to create smooth and textured surfaces. Incising wax to create intricate drawings and collages\, transfers\, and stencils will be investigated. Through demonstrations\, discussions\, and exploration\, participants will learn about this sumptuous material and discover its endless possibilities. Facing Gardiner’s Bay and the entrance to Napeague Harbor on the Lazy Point peninsula\, providing a magnificent\, dynamic natural setting and striking vistas. Inside you will be treated to a diverse collection of original artwork\, furnishings\, and objects\, such as designs collected by the D’Amicos through the Museum of Modern Art and the D’Amicos’ own. The majority of the artworks and numerous objects displayed are by Mabel\, a found object construction artist. Permanent displays and temporary exhibits show the breadth of her creative output\, which includes paintings\, work in glass and wood\, jewelry and clothes. The house features ingenious functional aspects like cabinetry integrated beneath the stairway\, unique lighting and electrical systems\, sculptural door casings\, and hand-glazed glass tile countertops\, all designed\, created\, and installed by Mabel and Victor. Instruction will aim at heightening the power of expression of each artist in relation to her/his inherent uniqueness. Artists may work using any medium or any combination thereof: acrylic\, oil\, watercolor\, tempera\, drawing media\, collage media and assemblage media. Easels and tables are available for use on the Barge decks and adjacent beaches. Instructor demonstrations\, motivational set-ups and Friday group critiques are included. Artists are encouraged to supply their own paints\, brushes\, and painting surfaces/canvases.
